There's More to Santorini Than Oia's Blue Domes
Santorini's caldera views are genuinely spectacular — but if that's all you do, you're missing more than half the island. Here are 10 activities worth your time.
1. Tour the Akrotiri Excavations
Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age city preserved under volcanic ash — Santorini's own Pompeii, and arguably more impressive. The multi-storey buildings, indoor plumbing, and intact frescoes date back 3,600 years. It's one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Aegean, and most visitors drive right past it. Entrance is under €15.
2. Swim at Perissa Black Sand Beach
The south coast beaches — Perissa, Perivolos, and Kamari — are volcanic black sand, warm water, and lined with tavernas. They're far less crowded than anything near Oia, and genuinely beautiful in a dramatic way white-sand beaches can't match.
3. Do a Wine Tasting at Santo Wines or Venetsanos
Santorini's Assyrtiko grape produces some of Greece's finest dry whites — crisp, mineral, and highly distinctive. Santo Wines has caldera views and runs structured tastings. Venetsanos is a converted winery in a cliff-side location that's less touristy and equally impressive. Book a table for sunset.
4. Hike from Fira to Oia
The 10km trail along the caldera rim is one of the best walks in the Greek islands. It takes 3–4 hours, passes through Imerovigli and Skaros Rock, and gives you constantly changing views without a tour group around you. Start early to beat the heat and reach Oia before it fills with day-trippers.
5. Explore Pyrgos Village
The highest village on the island, Pyrgos is a maze of whitewashed alleys, a medieval castle, and several excellent tavernas that are a fraction of the price of Oia. Come at sunset — you'll get panoramic views in every direction, and it's far less crowded than Oia's famous sunset spot.
6. Take a Catamaran to the Hot Springs
Santorini's volcanic activity means there are geothermal hot springs in the caldera near Nea Kameni. Most catamaran tours include a stop at the mud baths (lukewarm and sulphurous, but worth doing once), snorkeling on the lava formations, and a BBQ lunch on deck. Half-day trips run €50–80pp.
7. Visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera
In Fira, this small but excellent museum houses the original frescoes from Akrotiri — the ones you'll see plaster replicas of at the excavation site. The Boxing Children and Blue Monkeys frescoes alone are worth the visit. Free with EU student card.
8. Eat at Oia's Side Streets (Not the Caldera-Facing Terraces)
The restaurants with the view charge double for average food. Wander one block inland and you'll find family-run tavernas serving better food at half the price. Ask locally for wherever is packed with Greeks at lunch.
9. Drive to Vlychada Beach and the Tomato Factory
Vlychada's lunar-white pumice cliffs are unlike anything else on the island. Nearby, the Tomato Industrial Museum is a surprisingly interesting converted cannery — Santorini once produced most of Greece's tomato paste, and the machinery is still there.
10. Watch Sunrise, Not Just Sunset
Everyone chases the Oia sunset. Sunrise over the eastern cliffs near Imerovigli is equally beautiful, completely uncrowded, and you'll have it almost entirely to yourself. Set an alarm. It's worth it.
